[the reaction is immediate, as she turns on her heels towards the kitchen at his voice. sam goes for a hug in the same beat as she does, arms around his middle. she is grateful that he is here—conscious enough that he can use the horizon—and for the fact that everything in the horizon feels real.

she lets go after a moment and pulls her hands away to cup his face. she knows he's hiding what he actually looks like (would he know what he looks like enough to replicate it?), but seeing him at all is enough.]

You can't do that, Sam.

[you can't go out there and get yourself hurt to the point that you don't wake up. it's only then that she pulls her hands away, to clasp his hands for a moment.]

I don't know what I would do without you here.

[he's a rock amidst her friends—family, really—and fear gripped her so viciously when he stopped answering her messages.]

What happened?

[wanda thinks that the worst thing about being so far away in solvunn is that she can't actively be around to protect her loved ones. what if something worse happened to sam? what if steve got in trouble? what if she couldn't be there for peter when his sorrow caves in on him? what's worse is that even if she was there, anything she could do with her magic seems useless in the face of the singularity.

he still was swept about by the nightmares that plagued them? it's hardly an explanation, and part of her thinks that sam doesn't want to worry her more than necessary—or maybe he himself isn't too aware of what happened, which is a lot scarier to think about.

when he asks if anything happened with her, she can't quite meet his eyes.]

I haven't met someone who didn't have those nightmares. [yes, something did happen. wanda sighs, pulling away towards the counter where he put his beer down. taking it, she hands it over to him, motioning towards taking a seat together. their usual—the couch, surrounded by family pictures.] I'm actually on a small trip to the coast right now. [she gestures] It was... a lot. I didn't want to participate in Solvunn's idea of an exorcism.

[with another exhale, she sits herself down, pulling her legs up to cross them under her.]

I'm scared, Sam.

[after those nightmares, she's not just scared of losing her loved ones in this world, but what awaits her back home—this certainty carved in the pages of the darkhold.]

[she smiles back at him because it's contagious, this sam wilson positivity, this charm he embellishes with pride. she knocks her elbow against him, knowing that he's trying to lighten the mood.]

You realize that you boys keep throwing positivity out there with such intensity even if you don't know it'll really work out?

['you boys', sam and steve. they're soldiers, so of course they plan things through, but they also rely on their inspiration and stubbornness to do what's right. natasha used to give them a hard time for it, but she—and wanda—let themselves go with the flow.

wanda's afraid that this time, that much won't be enough.

she leans her head against sam's shoulder, letting her weight sink against his side.]

Of course I trust you. [quietly, like a little sister trying not to give her big brother too much credit. it's affectionate, as much as it can be for wanda maximoff. still, she lingers on something...] You didn't have any nightmares?

Perhaps whatever is causing this [—the singularity, right?—] thought you need a break. You've been here much longer than most of us.

[that's only an assumption, though. she is fully aware that it may not actually be a proper answer, and she worries about what it may really mean. should they even worry about it, at all?

wanda thinks that she doesn't want to worry too much about it, sitting here with sam at her side. it's not the same as seeing him actually hurt and in bed, unable to move too much, but it is enough to put her at ease, the fact that he's conscious enough to come see her.

if she can, she wants to be selfish—spend as much time as she can here.]

Will you tell me what you were doing out there? [the details always slip away, untold to her. she knows sam meets with stephen to discuss things—she makes sure to steer away from sam's domain during those times, or stay upstairs in the room he's created for her, like a pouty child. with her being in solvunn, sometimes she feels like she's not on the loop of anything.] Or is it a secret?

[wanda listens, watching the dew of condensation on sam's glass, sees how his hand tightens around it as he finds the words to explain what happened—and also what he thinks is happening. it reminds her all too much of missions back home, of the potentiality for wrong-doing, of how sometimes mission briefs were too simple and too to-the-point, only for them to find out whilst in the mission that they had actually gone in blind.

sometimes, things led to a dead end, or to something without much of a resolution.

this feels like the latter.]

...you're going to go back. [it's the obvious conclusion, the obvious decision to make. the next bit she says it with a bit of a light tone, looking down at her hands.] Because it's what we do.

[heroes, avengers, whatever they want to call themselves these days. she swallows, wishing that she wasn't so far away from him—physically—and that she could go, too, to keep him safe, to see with her own eyes that no harm would come to him or any of those important to her.

but that's not something she can do right now.]

I'll send you something. [she's resolute; she will find a way to do something with her magic that will help him, that will keep him safe.] Even if it's something that you really wish you had from back home, I can... do some things, like Peter's spider...web things? [#terminology? she turns to look at him.] And for Steve. It's not like he will let you go without him.

...so, just wait until it gets to you. Alright?

[she doesn't need to see his face to realize what reaction her words have caused on him; sam is incredibly easy to read as far as his emotions are concerned. wanda thinks, has thought, that it's because he doesn't mind being unguarded—but it's likely also just the way he is: open and welcoming, nothing hidden in his sleeve to be revealed later.

he is warm, and wanda can feel that even more as he pulls her closer to his side, an arm around her shoulders.

she lets him, leaning against him, wrapping an arm around his middle. she misses this—misses the home and clarity in her life when they were just the avengers. him promising that he'll wait for her package is a promise she knows he will keep.]

It's okay.

[softly said, a quiet sort of melancholy. sam is safe now, which is what matters. she cannot control what may happen in the future, but she can just take it as it is—one day at a time.]

Can we stay like this for a while?
