He feels like shit already about this, but they don't have the time to grieve out here on a mountain. Still, he should know before they go back.]

There's no easy way to say this, so I'm just going to spit it out.
[ shit. shit. it's shock he feels first, a kind of stillness that shatters through his chest at the text across his eyes.
and that's the problem, isn't it? he's shocked. shocked that it's jesper telling him, shocked that it's dean, shocked that they've gone this far and made it this long and now they've lost someone. but it's not just someone, is it? because it's dean.
he recalls his last conversation with him, and sam's chest tightens dangerously. painfully. ]
[ Jesper remembers the way it felt when Matthias died, the night they really thought they all managed to get away with it. That's how it feels now, because he'd been telling himself they would all survive this, it was the only option. He tried to be there for the other Sam, helped him as much as he could from a distance, and he'll follow up too. It's Dean's brother, it's the least he can do. ]
I don't think any of us are going to be okay for a long while.
But we have to get our people off this mountain. That's what he would want.
Sam might appreciate an ear when we get back. Jo and Castiel aren't helping, they're making it worse. Not that he'd say so to them. Nothing we can do right here and now though.
[ there's only so much any of them can do, really. sam's all too familiar with loss in the midst of action, how it feels to know you have to keep moving even when something like this happens.

He's worried they're going to run off and rage and he'll have to chase them. As much as that'd be a distraction, it'd be a risk to their lives, after something already traumatic.
I told him to tell them he'd appreciate it if they could keep their shit together for him, but he said 'that's not how we do things.' If I was there I would take them off his hands. I'll try that once we get back, if they're still worrying him.
